Why?
After a few years of owning a camera and doing what I can only describe as an autistic deep-dive into photography, I decided I wanted to move on from just taking photos and start creating art with intent. I wanted to create a project that was cohesive and had photos about something rather than just of something. At the same time, I was exploring my interest in the boudoir and fine art nude genres. Looking at examples of those genres, I saw something missing: people like I see everyday. The mothers I interact with. I wanted to showcase and celebrate those women the way I saw them. Complex, beautiful individuals who often feel overlooked. That evolved into Beyond Motherhood, focusing solely on mothers, some of whom might be feeling a loss of identity and others who might revel in their new role and persona. There is room for all here.
Ok, but Why You?
To put it simply, because I'm here and I'm interested in telling this story. I want to create art that highlights mothers. I care deeply about their stories and want to showcase them. I have no other qualifications beyond that.
What Do You, A Man, Have to Say About Motherhood?
Absolutely nothing. I'm not here to say anything. I'm here to listen and relay. I'm using my lens to focus on the experiences of these mothers (pun intended). I'm using the skills I have and building new ones, to showcase who they are, how they want to be seen and what they have to say.
So You are Some Great Artist Then?
Nope, not at all. I'm a photography enthusiast learning as I go. I think I have the capability to create wonderful art, but I know I have a ton to learn. I hope to share the things I learn here as well as highlight the mistakes I make; because that's an integral part of learning.
